SANParks tenders — park bids and awards
SANParks procures for a network of national parks spread from the Kruger lowveld to the Kgalagadi, and the remoteness of most of those sites shapes its contracts more than their technical content does.

About SANParks procurement
A large part of the SANParks list is conservation operations rather than construction: boundary and predator fencing, alien invasive plant clearing, game capture and translocation, veld and fire management, and the ranger and anti-poaching support that goes with them. These are labour-intensive contracts, often carrying explicit obligations to employ from communities adjacent to the park.
The tourism estate generates the building work. Rest camp accommodation, ablutions, restaurants, gate complexes, staff housing, water and sewage treatment plants and internal gravel roads all need refurbishment, and it usually has to happen while guests are on site. SANParks also runs long-term concession processes in which an operator builds and runs a lodge and pays a share of turnover back.
Bidding this work means costing logistics honestly. Sites can be hundreds of kilometres from the nearest supplier, crew accommodation may have to be arranged inside the park, work in big game areas requires an armed escort and restricted hours, and environmental and heritage authorisations constrain what may be disturbed. None of that appears in a unit rate carried over from an urban job.

Questions about SANParks tenders
- Which parks do SANParks tenders cover?
- Any park in the SANParks estate, from Kruger, Addo and Table Mountain through to Augrabies, Mapungubwe, Camdeboo and the Kgalagadi. The notice usually names the park, and the province breakdown here shows where open work currently sits.
- Do I need conservation experience to bid?
- For fencing, clearing, game work and fire management, relevant experience is normally a scored requirement. For building, plumbing, electrical and road work, ordinary construction credentials apply, though SANParks will still expect evidence that you can operate under park rules.
- What is a tourism concession opportunity?
- A long-term right to build and operate a tourism facility inside a park, awarded on the rental and turnover share offered, the guest experience proposed and the empowerment commitments made. The bidder is offering money to SANParks rather than requesting payment from it.
- Are these contracts open to small contractors?
- Many are. SANParks carries a socio-economic mandate, and a substantial share of its smaller maintenance, clearing and fencing work is aimed at enterprises based in park-adjacent communities, sometimes with subcontracting or local employment targets written into the conditions.
- When can rest camp refurbishment actually be done?
- In practice during the shoulder and low season, because camps stay open. Expect noise restrictions, limited working hours near guest units, and a programme dictated by occupancy rather than by the resources you would prefer to deploy.
- Can new park tenders be pushed to me?
- Yes. A saved search matches each new notice against your trade categories, chosen provinces and keywords and sends it by email or WhatsApp, which is the practical way to track a buyer like SANParks whose sites are scattered across nine provinces.
