National and provincial

Health department tenders

Health is one of the largest public buyers in South Africa and one of the most fragmented on the tender feed: the national department, all nine provincial departments and the National Health Laboratory Service each publish under their own name.

About Health procurement

Health procurement spans a wider range of trades than almost any other department. A single month can carry hospital construction, medical equipment supply, laundry and catering services, security, waste management, ICT and laboratory consumables — which means contractors who would never describe themselves as being in healthcare regularly win health work.

Health's fragmentation matters commercially. Provincial Health departments run their own supply chains with their own closing conventions and their own briefing practices, so a supplier accredited with one province is not automatically positioned in another. This page collects all of them so the shape of the whole market is visible at once rather than province by province.

The National Health Laboratory Service is included on this Health page because it is the country's diagnostic laboratory network and its procurement — reagents, equipment, facilities, logistics — reads as health department work to almost everyone searching for it, even though it is a separate public entity with its own board.

Health tenders — questions

Does this cover both national and provincial health tenders?
Yes. The national department, all nine provincial health departments and the National Health Laboratory Service publish separately to the eTenders feed under different names, and this page collects all of them into one list.
Why does health appear under so many different buyer names?
Buyer names on the feed are free text and each department loads its own, so health appears as a bare "Health", as "Eastern Cape - Health", as "North West - Department of Health" and several other spellings. Searching one name returns a fraction of what is actually open.
Do health tenders only suit medical suppliers?
No, and this is the most common misconception about them. Health departments tender for construction, maintenance, catering, laundry, security, waste removal, ICT and transport alongside clinical goods, so most of the work is not medical at all.
Is the National Health Laboratory Service part of the health department?
It is a separate public entity with its own board rather than a division of the department, but it is the national diagnostic laboratory network and its procurement is health work in every practical sense, so it is included on this page.
Can I be alerted to new health tenders?
Yes. An Industrial Hub account lets you filter by buyer, province and trade and receive matching tenders by email and WhatsApp as they publish, which is the only practical way to watch a buyer this fragmented.
