PRASA tenders — rail bids and awards

PRASA runs commuter rail, and most of what it buys today is aimed at putting corridors that were stripped bare back into service rather than at extending the network.

About PRASA procurement

Corridor recovery dominates the PRASA tender list. Years of vandalism and cable theft left whole Metrorail lines without overhead traction equipment, signalling or intact perway, and the work to reverse that is packaged as civil, electrical and signalling contracts on a line-by-line basis. Read the notice for which corridor and which depot it belongs to before anything else, because mobilisation distance drives the price.

Security is a procurement category here in a way it is not at most buyers. Guarding of stations, rail reserve and construction sites is tendered at scale, and physical works contracts frequently carry their own security obligation, because unguarded material on an open corridor does not survive the night. Firms bidding construction should price that obligation rather than assume the client carries it.

The rolling stock and station sides of PRASA are procured very differently from the corridor work. New train sets come through long-running manufacture and maintenance agreements, while station refurbishment, ablution blocks, roofing and platform work reach the feed as ordinary building contracts a mid-grade CIDB contractor can carry. The category breakdown below separates the two quickly.

Questions about PRASA tenders

What kind of work does PRASA tender for?
Mostly commuter rail recovery: perway and track rehabilitation, overhead traction equipment, signalling, substations, station and depot buildings, and a very large volume of security and facilities services. Rolling stock and its long-term maintenance sit under separate PRASA manufacture agreements rather than routine notices.
Does PRASA publish tenders in every province?
Not evenly. PRASA commuter services concentrate in Gauteng, the Western Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, and the tender list follows that footprint, with mainline passenger and property work appearing more sporadically elsewhere. The province breakdown on this page shows where open work currently sits.
Is a CIDB grade needed for PRASA work?
For civil, electrical and building contracts, yes, and the notice normally states the grade and class of works. Security, cleaning and professional service contracts do not use CIDB at all, which is why filtering on grade alone hides a large share of what is open.
How competitive is bidding on PRASA contracts?
Corridor and signalling work draws a narrow field, because few firms hold the specialist competence. Station buildings, cleaning and guarding draw very wide ones. The PRASA award records below are the fastest way to see which of the two a category behaves like.
What should a first-time bidder check on a PRASA notice?
Whether the site sits inside an operating rail reserve. That determines safety accreditation, permit-to-work arrangements, night or weekend occupations between train services, and escort requirements, all of which change the programme and the price well beyond a comparable job on open ground.
How soon can a new PRASA notice reach me?
A saved search on your trade categories, province and keywords catches the match. Starter emails up to 3 new matches a day immediately and sends one daily WhatsApp summary; Professional sends up to 3 matching WhatsApp alerts a day within 30 minutes — both early enough, in practice, to arrange a site visit rather than arrive after the compulsory briefing. Whether your CIDB grade covers the work is answered on the tender itself, by the Bid Readiness check.
