About the National Research Foundation procurement

Those facilities set the technical bar. Optical astronomy in the Northern Cape, radio astronomy in the Karoo and at Hartebeesthoek, accelerator physics near Cape Town, aquatic biodiversity research and a national environmental observation network each need instrumentation, precision engineering, cryogenics, radio frequency components and control systems that very few local suppliers hold off the shelf.

Remote site logistics are a category in themselves. Facilities in the Northern Cape sit hours from the nearest town, so contracts for civil works, power, water, accommodation, catering, transport and security at those sites are real opportunities for regional businesses, and the National Research Foundation weighs the ability to sustain a presence there heavily.

One constraint has no parallel anywhere else on the feed. Radio astronomy sites are protected from electromagnetic interference by regulation, so equipment taken onto or near them must meet emission limits, ordinary vehicles, generators, radios and even power tools may be restricted, and a supplier who ignores that in a bid to the National Research Foundation will not be able to perform the contract.
